The poet Gottfried Keller – also the Official Secretary of the Canton of Zurich and a wine lover – wrote the instructions for the Rheinau monastery cellar to be taken over by the cantonal administration after the dissolution of the foundation in 1862. With the stroke of his pen, Keller sealed the merger of the Rheinau monastery cellar and the Zurich hospital cellar, thereby laying the cornerstone of today’s Staatskellerei Zürich.
Staatskellerei Zürich's purpose – supplying the cantonal hospitals and institutions with wine – remained the same even after the merger. Today, the company, which has been part of Mövenpick Wein AG since 1997, is one of the largest Zurich wine producers. Staatskellerei Zürich buys and processes grapes from 90 different producers throughout the canton of Zurich.
